Consumer Reports & OneTrust Successfully Complete End-to-End Testing of the Data Rights Protocol in a Production Environment

Earlier this year, the Data Rights Protocol (DRP) consortium announced the release of the DRP 1.0 spec, signaling that the DRP is ready to be deployed and used in production environments to send, receive and process data rights requests automatically and at scale. We are now excited to announce the successful completion of end-to-end (E2E) testing of the DRP as part of a deployed solution to automatically exercise consumers’ data rights in a production environment. These tests took place between DRP consortium members Consumer Reports (CR) and OneTrust.

CR’s digital privacy app Permission Slip has implemented the DRP to automatically send DRP privacy requests on behalf of users in its role as Authorized Agent.  As a Privacy Infrastructure Provider, OneTrust has stood up DRP API endpoints to receive DRP requests and process them on behalf of their customers. CR uses OneTrust to manage and process such requests as part of our enterprise privacy program. This latest test confirmed that CR can now receive and automatically process inbound requests initiated via the DRP in our deployed OneTrust instance.

“Responding to data rights requests goes beyond regulatory obligation, it’s also a powerful way for organizations to build trust and demonstrate they are using data responsibly. The DRP does just that by improving the data rights experience for consumers and businesses alike, and we look forward to broader adoption.” — Ryan Edge, Director, Privacy & Data Governance at OneTrust

This is a major milestone, and was the last remaining technical step to ready the DRP for production use. Currently the DRP consortium is working on finalizing and adopting a governance agreement that will clear the way for industry adoption. We look forward to seeing the Data Rights Protocol widely used to help consumers exercise their data rights more easily, and to help businesses in making their compliance efforts streamlined, efficient, transparent and scalable.

We’d like to thank our partners at OneTrust and teams across CR for their collaboration on this test.
