Opportunity: Privacy Compliance Research Consultant

Permission Slip is a free app which allows users to exercise their data privacy rights by requesting that companies delete or stop selling their data. Companies that we send these data rights requests to each follow their own process for receiving and actioning the requests. As part of delivering these requests at scale, it’s imperative that we maintain our understanding of these company processes. We are looking for someone to audit the data rights requests processes of the ~400 companies supported in Permission Slip. This consulting project will have meaningful implications for protecting consumer privacy and may contribute to published work depending on the results of the audit.

Responsibilities:

  • Understand and document the privacy program processes of the ~400 companies currently supported in Permission Slip.
  • Flag companies whose processes may be non-compliant with current privacy legislation or whose processes provide a poor user experience.
  • Potentially evaluate other consumer workflows companies offer (ie: flows to return a product).
  • Research documents the company provides to consumers to understand their offerings such as privacy policies, terms of service and FAQs.
  • Synthesize results of the company audit by tagging each company with relevant attributes in a centralized database.

This consultant opportunity will span 2-3 months of work and is available to begin immediately with  an opportunity for extension to further operational research. This is a remote opportunity, with the option for hybrid work for candidates located near Consumer Reports offices in New York or Washington, D.C.

Qualifications:

  • Attention to detail and thorough documentation.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite applications and able to pick up new technologies quickly.
  • Curiosity about privacy, data rights, consumer protection, or public interest technology.

Bonus Points If:

  • You’re passionate about consumer privacy, data rights, or public interest technology.
  • You have experience with CRMs, databases and task management software (e.g. Zendesk, Monday.com).
  • You have previous, relevant research experience.
